Starlink is experimenting with providing satellite internet to almost all parts of the world |
Starlink, which is owned by SpaceX, calls the new service the Global Roaming Service, and says it will be available for $200 per month, in addition to its $599 equipment price.
The service, which uses Starlink links between satellites (also known as space lasers), comes with an important caveat. In its message to users, the company warned that they should expect typical high-speed, low-latency Internet service, but they will experience short periods of connectivity. Weak, or completely disconnected. However, I promised that the situation would improve significantly with time.
It is noteworthy that it is not clear how Starlink will fulfill its promise to provide the Internet to all parts of the earth, as the company is still awaiting regulatory approval in different countries, and it is not available in other countries. However, PCMag reports that the company provides global roaming service to some users outside the company's coverage areas, such as: Greenland.
And while (Starlink) already allows users to travel with internet connection dishes within certain restrictions, it seems that the global roaming service will come with fewer restrictions.
For example, the current Starlink RV plan, available for a monthly fee of $135, allows users to equip their RV with Starlink devices to connect to the Internet while traveling, but with a higher priced dish. This plan is only available in certain parts of the world, but it doesn't have the same priority as residential customers, which results in slower speeds.
Meanwhile, the $25 per month portable add-on, which comes on top of a $110 monthly subscription for resident customers, allows users to take their plate with them if they travel within their home continent, and requires them to change their permanent address if they have been away for “an extended period of time.” » away from their home.
There is also the expensive $5,000 per month marine plan for users who want to access the internet at sea.
Similar to the Starlink RV plan, users will be able to pause global roaming at any time.
And (Starlink) alerted users outside the United States that they will be responsible for importing the equipment, which means that they will have to ensure that the equipment complies with local laws and regulations, in addition to paying any required customs duties or even import taxes.
